A Comparison of the River Ganga and the River Thames
The River Ganga flows through India and Bangladesh, whereas the River Thames flows through England. The Ganga is the longest river in India, while the Thames is labelled the cleanest river in the world.
Both rivers are economically important because they provide fresh water and support tourism and adventure sports. The Ganga is also used for irrigation, fishing, cooking, drinking and bathing, and it has great religious significance. The Thames supports transport as well as leisure activities.
The Ganga is among the five most polluted rivers in the world because industrial waste and other pollutants enter it. Water-borne diseases have increased, and the Ganges river dolphin is on the brink of extinction. The Thames was also highly polluted during the nineteenth century, but treatment plants were installed after it was declared “biologically dead.” Years later, a bottlenosed whale was spotted in its clean water. Therefore, the recovery of the Thames shows that polluted rivers can be restored through determined action.
